On the heels of the 2014’s #35 ranking on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines of 2016, the 2015 bottling continues to affirm that Gap’s Crown is one of the top California Pinot noir vineyards. Steep slopes and rocky soils cause significant vine stress, and the resulting wines are concentrated, with complex flavors and phenomenal structure. Moderate weather in 2015 allowed for optimal picking conditions, and flavors were bursting as the grapes matured. Dark cherry and boysenberry aromas lead to hints of baking spice and thyme. This is a complex wine that makes a stunning first impression. In 2015 we fermented 10% of the grapes whole-cluster, adding to the wine’s rich character and aromatic complexity.

Gap’s Crown Vineyard sits near the town of Cotati at an elevation of 300 to 800 feet, where it overlooks the Sangiacomo Vineyard just to the west. This is a high-end, hillside vineyard  that has established itself as a premium source for top rated Pinot noir and Chardonnay wines vintage after vintage. This extremely rocky, well-drained site with northwestern exposure benefits from the cool micro-climate of the area, as well as the natural stress created by the  severity of the terrain. It consistently produces powerful, concentrated Pinot noir wines in the New World-style. The Petaluma Gap moderates warm spells in the summer and fall, and enables the fruit to hang on the vine into late September and October for optimal ripening and balance.

14.6% alc., pH 3.47, TA 0.64, 768 cases, $69. Release spring 2017. This vineyard is located on Roberts Road just above the Sangiacomo Vineyard yet the wines it produces are completely different. The base of the wine is clone 115 and 667, with small amounts of “828” that was whole cluster pressed and blended in for an overall total of 10% whole cluster. The 667 grown here produces very small berries and potent concentration so it is used judiciously. The vineyard typically delivers fruit richness, robust tannins and ample acidity and Erich must fight to tone the wine down. In 2015, tiny berries resulted in high levels of concentration. Clones fermented separately and aged separately before blending. Small amount of whole cluster. Opentop fermentation with native yeast and aged in French oak barrels, 50% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The 2017 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard was made with 10% whole cluster and aged in 0% new French oak. Pale to medium ruby, the nose is slow to unfurl to scents of smoked cranberries, baked rhubarb, pure raspberry, and strawberry preserves, candied violets, and blackberry pie with spicy and earthy touches. The palate is medium-bodied, silky, and intense, with unfurling.spiced flavor layers. It has a fine, grainy frame and seamless freshness. finishing long and layered. "

"Brawny yet bright in tangy orange peel, cranberry and strawberry, this made wine from a well-known and coveted site is impressive well in its breadth and complexity. With thirst-quenching acidity, it fills the palate with fruit. spice and oak in equal measure.

"The Gap's Crown Vineyard is one of the great vineyards of the in the Sonoma Coast AVA, set between 300 and 800 feet, right next to the Sangiacomo Vineyard. This wine opens with a bouquet of white rose, cran-pomegranate and orange zest. The salinity of the wine shines through as bright red cherry candy. guava puree, Mandarin orange rind and cola flavors all marvelously combine on the palate. This marvelous wine shows not only serious range but a beautiful, soft texture. Enjoy this over the next decade or more. Drink 2019-2030."
