Vintage: 2019

Region: Napa Valley

Country: USA

Opus One was created in 1978 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the legendary owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, and the famous Napa Valley wine producer Robert Mondavi. By combining both families’ winemaking traditions and innovations, the partners aimed to create an exceptional wine in the heart of the Napa Valley. Opus One was a success and has been acclaimed as a “Californian First Growth”. Opus One has 55 hectares (136 acres) of vines planted with Bordeaux grape varieties. Baroness Philippine de Rothschild inaugurated the new Opus One winery, one of the architectural gems of the Napa Valley, in 1991.

Constellation Brands acquired Robert Mondavi Winery in 2004 and reached an agreement with Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA in the following year to continue Opus One as a 50/50 joint venture. Asserting its independence and striking a perfect balance between its two partners, Opus One’s sole aim is to maintain its founders’ vision and passion for future generations.

A rich and lively Californian red wine

The estate: The fruit of a common goal, Opus One arose from the vision of two illustrious figures in the wine industry, Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, an iconic winemaker from the Napa Valley.

The vineyard: Opus One has become a legendary Californian wine, and comes from vineyards located in the heart of the Oakville appellation. A true "Grand Cru", Opus One embodies the excellence of two winemaking traditions that have come together to create a quintessential, one-of-a-kind  and exceptional wine.

The vintage: A particularly rainy spring delayed budburst (recorded on March 27th, 15 days later than in previous years), flowering and veraison. The milder conditions at the end of the summer accelerated ripening until the harvest

The tasting:

Nose: The nose blends fruity (black plum, blueberry, blackcurrant) and floral (dried rose petals) fragrances with a subtle minerality.

Palate: The lively and creamy palate reveals a subtle acidity as well as very fine tannins. Throughout the tasting experience, the palate exudes aromas of black fruits, fresh herbs, espresso and cocoa. The finish is persistent and seductive due to its dark chocolate aromas.

Vinification and ageing: Vatting time for 22 days. Aged for 19 months in French oak barrels (100% new).

The blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), Merlot (8%), Petit Verdot (6%), Cabernet Franc (6%), Malbec (2%)

Wine Advocate: 97-99 points

Winemaker Michael Silacci commented that usually the blends are finished in January or February after the vintage. This year, with the 2019s, he was still tweaking the blend, but he did mention that this is "pretty close to the final blend."
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Opus One leaps from the glass with notes of Black Forest cake, Morello cherries, mulberries and fresh blackcurrants plus hints of licorice, wilted roses, Sichuan pepper and iron ore. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with juicy black, blue and red fruits, framed by velvety tannins and background freshness, finishing on a compelling earthy/mineral note. Tasted as a barrel sample, this is a truly magnificent Opus One in the making!

James Suckling: 99 points

The Opus One 2019 has intense aromas of black plum, blueberry, black currant, and dried rose petals, accentuated by mineral undertones. The creamy, satiny texture is framed by fine grained tannins. The freshness and soft glow of acidity create a subtle tension with dark fruit flavors, savory herbs, espresso, and cocoa. A delicate dark chocolate bitterness lingers on the finish.
