About Winery

The present-day Cheval Blanc vineyards had vines at least as far back as the 18th century, as shown by Belleyme's map of the region dated 1764. Nearly a century later, the estate was acquired by the Fourcaud-Laussac family who owned it until 1998, when it was sold to Mr Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère.

The vineyard is in a single block, and borders on the Pomerol appellation. An outstanding terror and unusual proportions of Cabernet Franc and Merlot give this great wine an absolutely unique flavor. Chateau Cheval Blanc has had a greater number of outstanding vintages than any other classified great growth over the past century.

Another unusual characteristic of Cheval Blanc is that once it reaches its peak, it maintains it for a very long time. This admirable wine is powerful, soft, rich, round and silky. It has tremendous fruit and elegance as well as exceptional quality from year to year.

‘A potential 100-point wine’
Decanter’s Georgie Hindle rated Cheval Blanc 2022 at 98 points during the recent en primeur tastings in Bordeaux, adding it was a ‘potential 100-point wine’ to watch.

‘An extremely gorgeous 2022 taking the best from the vintage in terms of power, concentration and structure and presenting it with elegance, purity and a kind of quiet confidence that Cheval does so well,’ Hindle wrote in her tasting note.

This 2022 vintage offers an incredible character, very far from the idea we could get by simply looking at the temperature records in the vineyard, during summer 2022. Most of the wines are very aromatic, concentrated with a fine texture and an unexpected freshness. An incredible vintage with many beautiful wines !

William Kelley (Wine Advocate) stated that Bordeaux had produced some “monumental” wines in 2022 whereas James Suckling mentioned in his report that “he never came across anything like this 2022 vintage” (in 40 years of Bordeaux barrel tastings). For him “it sets a new benchmark for Bordeaux after his first reference vintage for the region from barrel, 1982”. After massive 3 weeks tastings, he attested “high quality from top to bottom”. William Kelley (Wine Advocate) expressed the same idea: “terroirs conventionally thought to be of only modest potential were also capable of delivering brilliant results this year.”
