Winemaker Notes

Sena is an authentic Chilean blend made from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot varieties. The Carmenere variety adds an evident Chilean personality to the wine.A dark ruby-red color with violet highlights. Intense on the nose, with abundant fresh red and black fruit that evokes raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. The red fruit stands out on the palate, nicely accompanied by sweet spice. Well rounded and silky tannins this is an elegant, complex wine, refreshing with outstanding structure and balance

About Winery

In 1995, Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick pioneered one of Chile's first international joint ventures, a bold and forward-thinking move in those times. They set a very challenging goal: to reach the full potential of Chile's wine country and to create a truly world-class wine. These two are distinguished traditional wine families shared the passion for excellence and innovation. Sharing their dream and dedication, in 1997 they released the first vintage of Sena (1995), one of Chile's first iconic wines, marking a milestone and initiating the path for making ultra-premium wines in Chile. Eduardo Chadwick searched alongside Robert Mondavi for four years before finding the ideal terroir in Chile's Valle de Aconcagua. Sena, the Chilean Bordeax-blend, is the culmination of their vision, an expression of consummate quality and character.

95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A wine with a linear and solid fruit character with firm tannins and lots of attractive fruit. Firm tannins and lots happening. Not the intense fruit of the 2012 but a classy undertone. Some may like the reserved character to this compared to the 2012. Wait for three to four years. Inner quote mark (6/2014)

Outer quote mark The 2011 Sena is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carmenere, 15% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in 75% new French oak barrels for 22 months. It has a bright cherry color and restrained aromas of blackberries, spices, cedar wood, tobacco and a hint of mint. The palate is a little tight and restrained, and the wine medium-bodied, with balanced concentration and good acidity. Young but accessible, it shows great elegance and balance. I like it more than the older vintages that I had the chance to taste for context. It needs to develop the bouquet and complexity that, without a doubt, will come with time in bottle. Drink 2015-2027. Sena’s hillside vineyard is on the cooler side of the Aconcagua valley (the limit to ripen Cabernet and Carmenere), extending over 45 hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah. The colluvial soils on the valley’s slopes contain a variety of textures and stone proportions, resulting in a great diversity of well-drained gravel, rock and loam. The backbone of the wine is Cabernet Carmenere, complemented with the other grapes. In the 1990s, Eduardo Chadwick visited Napa, where he met Robert Mondavi. Mondavi visited Chile in 1993 and Eduardo was the one to drive him around. Mondavi was delighted with the potential he saw, but there was really no quality wine to show the world the potential of Chile. It was a 50/50 joint venture to make a blend including Carmenere Inner quote mark (6/2014)
