About Winery

Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac 5th Grand Cru Classé, has enjoyed an irresistible rise to become one of the Médoc's most emblematic names. Managed by Justine and Alfred Tesseron, Château Pontet-Canet has established itself as one of the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in the Pauillac appellation, with results that exceed all expectations. Vintage after vintage, the estate has established itself as one of the finest references on Bordeaux's Left Bank.

Château Pontet-Canet is a critically lauded wine estate located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux's northern Médoc region. The estate was ranked as a fifth growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification although in contemporary critical and popular circles, the estate is considered worthy of a much higher ranking. Its grand vin is a classic, structured claret with great finesse, regularly achieving high scores and much in-demand worldwide. The second wine of the estate is Hauts de Pontet-Canet.

Château Pontet-Canet was founded by Jean-Francois de Pontet, royal governor of the Médoc, who combined several Pauillac vineyard plots in the 1720s. His descendants added neighboring parcels in Canet. The wine was not château-bottled until 1972.  Pontet-Canet has been owned by the Tesseron family of Cognac fame since 1975, and under the family's control quality has risen greatly, along with auction prices and popularity. Pontet-Canet is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, and is full bodied with significant long-term cellaring potential.

The 2024 vintage

After an exceptionally wet and mild winter, the beginning of the season was unusually early. With the heavy rain in early April, the first mildew contaminations quickly appeared. Coolerthan-usual temperatures slowed vine growth. Flowering took place under favorable conditionsFortunately, thanks to meticulous work and controlled management of vine vigor, and cover crops, grape losses due to mildew remained minimal.

The summer was marked by a beneficial drought, which is always a great asset for wine quality. In this seasonal dryness, water stress gradually set in, leading to the destruction of herbaceous aromas and the synthesis of fruity aromas. At the end of August, an unstable sky reappeared and persisted until the end of the harvest. We made a happy choice : Patience guided our every move, giving priority to observing and listening to the vineyard. We took the time to wait for optimal ripeness, giving this vintage every chance to become a beautiful « Grand Vin ».
