Tasting notes
"Very nice bold & smooth Cabernet Sauvignon. Good note of spices, oak, and earth...It kicks you from the back of the throat with very long finish...absolutely beautiful. And...it totally evolves in 3 hours into richer, bold, and intense black fruit with mellowed out tannin. One of big Napa's for me. What a beast."
History
In French, “provenance” means origin or source. For us, this means a sense of belonging from the landscape to the people. An identity of shared roots and unspoken history. That place for Provenance Vineyards is Napa Valley. Our personality as a wine produce is unveiled in various Napa Valley vineyards. Each showcase unique origin and character of the wine they ultimately produce.
Our heavy lifting is done in the vineyards, months before harvest, seeking out the best areas and evaluating the growth and character of that vintage. Through 20-year relationships with top growers in Napa Valley, we understand the distinctiveness of each vineyard, and we let the character of the highest quality fruit speak for itself. Within Napa Valley, we source grapes from Rutherford, Calistoga and other American Viticultural Areas. Single vineyard fruit from Howell Mountain, Oak Knoll, Star, Sleeping Lady and others contribute as some as the highest quality fruit in the valley.
Our Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vines planted at 500 to 900 feet of elevation in the northern reaches of the Mayacamas Mountains. While the Diamond Mountain American Viticultural Area (AVA) encompasses 5,000 acres, only 500 acres are planted because of the steep terrain. Our estate vineyard, planted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon, totals 50.63 net vine acres. The site’s deep, well-draining Aiken loam soils—iron-rich and acidic—are formed from weathered basic volcanic rock. Cool breezes coming through the Sonoma Gap give the grapes their excellent sugar-to-acid balance and long hang time. We chose clones 4, 6, 8 and 169 and planted the younger vines with closer spacing for greater competition between the vines, resulting in small clusters with deep flavor intensity.
95 Points, James Suckling
“So aromatic you can smell the forest floor and berry character. Full body, yet reserved and tight. Beautifully clear and vivid fruit and fine tannins. This is very polished and focused. A fantastic example. Better in 2021.” - James Suckling
