2022 Chateau Gracia Right Bank France

Vintage: 2022

Region: Right Bank

Country: France

Winemaker Notes

The blend is 80-90% Merlot and the remainder, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. They exhibit massive fruit power and tannin as well as equally huge extract, intensity, and length.

About Winery

Chateau Gracia was born in 1994 when Michel Gracia purchased 1.5 hectares of vines in great terroir, not far from Troplong Mondot. Thanks to prodding by Jean Luc Thunevin and Alain Vauthier of Ausone, he began producing his own wine with the 2007 vintage. Great care is taken in every aspect of the winemaking process and is part of the reason these small production wines are so special.

Marked by its historic fortified village—perhaps the prettiest in all of Bordeaux, the St-Émilion appellation, along with its neighboring village of Pomerol, are leaders in quality on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. These Merlot-dominant red wines (complemented by various amounts of Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon) remain some of the most admired and collected wines of the world.

St-Émilion has the longest history in wine production in Bordeaux—longer than the Left Bank—dating back to an 8th century monk named Saint Émilion who became a hermit in one of the many limestone caves scattered throughout the area.

Today St-Émilion is made up of hundreds of independent farmers dedicated to the same thing: growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc (and tiny amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon). While always roughly the same blend, the wines of St-Émilion vary considerably depending on the soil upon which they are grown—and the soils do vary considerably throughout the region.

Jeb Dunnuck 94-96 Points

"The 2022 Château Gracia showed beautifully, with a vivid ruby/purple hue as well as a great notes of ripe blue fruits, spring flowers, violets, and chalky minerality. A rough blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, it's medium to full-bodied, has plenty of richness and power, and offers an overriding sense of purity and elegance. It's gorgeous wine from Michel Gracia's tiny 1.83-hectare vineyard."

James Suckling 94-95 Points

"A solid core of fruit with a freshness and brightness. Medium body. Creamy fine tannins. Serious finish."
