Winemaker Notes

The Mad Hatter is an aromatic blend of plum, wild raspberry, fig, Maraschino cherry, and cocoa powder and a hint of baking spice. On the palate, it has bold and lively flavors with a rich mouthfeel and a long, smooth finish.

About Winery

It began on back country roads and among the vines. The Beckstoffer family arrived in the Napa Valley in 1975 and the young son of a future pioneer spent his days in the vineyards throughout every growing season, cultivating deep roots.

Brought up to respect the land and its fruit, Tuck naturally sought out the practice of viticulture, learning from the masters around him. Much like his father before him, he is a farmer first. It was only after he mastered the art of first craft that he turned his attention to a second craft—winemaking. Over three decades after he first set foot in the valley, Tuck bottled his first wine. For him, it was not a whim or passion project, but the culmination of a life lived on the land, among the vines.

Today, Tuck is one of the few Napa stewards who is both a grower and a winemaker. It is this pedigree that makes his approach different: the process begins with the land itself and culminates with a reverence for the winemaking traditions of the past—sharing successes and failures among fellow craftsmen and appreciating the fruits of their labor over a beautiful bottle of wine.

Dancing Hares' second wine. The Mad Hatter is a Bordeaux-style blend crafted by noted winemaker Andy Erickson (Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Ovid, Newton Vineyard, and Spottswoode, to name a few) with consulting winemaker Michel Rollan.

The first vintage of Mad Hatter was made from the 2003 harvest, with the commitment of making an elegant and well-balanced Bordeaux blend from vineyards throughout Napa Valley. The 2015 vintage aptly continues that commitment. Under the winemaking direction of Tuck Beckstoffer and Shawn Johnson, we have selected vineyards on Pritchard Hill, St. Helena and Pope Valley along with a small amount of Mendocino fruit. By blending Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc, we have created a wine with complex aromas, great balance and a long smooth finish.

Notes from the Winemaker:

Since the first vintage in 2003, our goal with Mad Hatter has been to craft an elegant Bordeaux blend using grapes grown throughout the Napa Valley. The 2016 vintage aptly continues that commitment, with vineyards in St Helena, Rutherford, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Diamond Mountain.

Under the winemaking and farming direction of Shawn Johnson and Tuck Beckstoffer, vineyard blocks were selected with a blend of micro climates and soils to highlight the best Napa Valley has to offer, creating a wine with complex aromas, purity of fruit, balance and a long silky finish.

Our 2016 Mad Hatter expresses aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and toasted almonds. In the mouth, flavors of blackberry, licorice and plum come forth to enhance a full mouthfeel and silky finish.

92 Points - James Suckling:
"Plenty of ripe blueberry and plum aromas here with a swathe of violet-like florals, too. The palate is succulent and fleshy with a long array of plush, supple tannins that carry ample depth and rich, fresh fruit to the finish. A blend of 48 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 40 per cent merlot, and 12 per cent petite sirah. Drink or hold." - (Nov 2018)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Red Blend Mad Hatter is composed of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 12% old-vine Petite Sirah. It sings of crushed red and black cherries, warm cassis and blueberry compote with suggestions of forest floor, camphor and Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is well-poised with chewy, approachable tannins and a spicy kick to the finish." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Oct 2018)

Antonio Galloni's Vinous Media:
"The 2016 Mad Hatter is an attractive entry-level offering in Tuck Becktoffer's range. Medium in body, with pretty red cherry and plum fruit, the 2016 will drink nicely upon release. A burst of spice and peppery notes add complexity to this medium-bodied, understated Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Petite Sirah blend." - Antonio Galloni (Dec 2018)
