Winemaker Notes

The history of Yquem (like its wine) keeps a mystery even today. If the vineyard has been existing for a long time, the present castle is rather quite recent (the oldest parts date from the 15th century). In 1993, four hundred years old were celebrated at Château Yquem. It was on the 8th of December 1593 when Jacques de Sauvage acquired in tenure simple by an agreement of exchange of estates "la maison appelée Yquem...", a Crown's property at that time.
In the genealogy of Lur Saluces, there are three branches to be considered : the "Lur", the "Saluces", the "Sauvage". The archives of the Domain allow us to get back in the family's history until 990.

The "Lur" originate from Franconie (Fruin de Lur lived in Limousin in 990, while the "Saluces" branch comes from the Marquisate of Saluzzo in the Piedmont).

Under Louis XVI, in 1785 exactly, the domain of Yquem came into the Lur-Saluces family by the marriage of Françoise Joséphine de Sauvage, the "Lady of Yquem", with Louis Amédée de Lur Saluces, colonel of Penthièvre dragons (who was a godson of Louis XV and Lady Victoire de France).

About Winery

Château d’Yquem, located in Sauternes in Bordeaux’s Graves region, has a history stretching back to the Middle Ages, when the site was first fortified in the 12th century. By the 16th and 17th centuries, the estate had developed into a wine-producing property, eventually gaining renown for its sweet wines made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). Its reputation was cemented in 1855 when it was uniquely classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification, the only Sauternes to receive this distinction. Over centuries, ownership passed through noble families and later to the LVMH group, but the estate has consistently produced wines celebrated for their extraordinary longevity, complexity, and prestige, making Château d’Yquem one of the most iconic names in the world of fine wine.

92 |  Wine Spectator

Forward and flattering, with unctuous marmalade, blood orange, apricot chutney and ginger notes. Juicy and engaging, but without the finely beaded acidity to stretch out fully. Drink now through 2035.

A rich Yquem, with coffee, dried orange skin, and dried apples. Full and sweet, with a round body and very yummy. A touch of bitterness on the palate.

Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The millennial 2000 Chateau d’Yquem is a valiant effort in one of the most challenging Sauternes vintages in recent memory. The 2000 is quite deep in color. The nose is crisp and well-defined but not the most complex, as you would expect from a truly challenging growing season in Sauternes. It is pleasant in its own way with delicate scents of tangerine, yellow flowers and Mirabelle. The palate is well-balanced with marmalade tinged opening. I like the acidity here, an Yquem with good race, although it does feel a little tapered toward the finish. Drink now-2025. Tasted March 2014.
