Veuve Clicquot Vintage Brut Rose

Vintage: 2015

Country: France

Region: Champagne

Tasting Notes

In 1810, Madame Clicquot invented the first ever vintage champagne. Since then, the house has cultivated its art of ageing. This Vintage Rose 2015 is crafted only from "Premier and Grand Cru" grapes (50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 20% Meunier). Its aromatic richness and complexity are enhanced by a prolonged ageing on lees, as well as 10% of wines composing the blend aged in oak casks.

History of Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot, now one of the largest Champagne Houses, was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot under the label "Clicquot". After establishing the brand throughout Europe, Russia and the United States, Philippe was joined by his son, François Clicquot, at the head of the House in 1798. Seven years later, following his untimely death, François' young widow, Barbe Ponsardin, took over the family business at just 27 years old. The House would subsequently be renamed in her honor: 'Veuve Clicquot' means 'The Widow Clicquot.'

The 2015 Champagne Vintage Rosé is medium pink with jeweled ruby/orange highlights and was aged for at least six years before disgorgement. It’s fruity but carries more spice and intensity, with a pithy structure and a full-bodied palate of rich strawberry preserve and rhubarb jelly. Ten percent of the blend was vinified and aged in oak, adding extra richness and fleshiness to the texture. Well-balanced and ripe without being cloying, it has savory saffron spice, 8 grams per liter dosage, and 13% red wine in the blend. It has the ability to age for another 15 years and can stand up beautifully to hard cheeses like Parmesan, charcuterie, or duck. Aromatically, it’s a bit shy today, but the palate has a lovely fruitiness balanced with spice.
