Winemaker Notes
The 2020 Pahi by Escarpment Single Vineyard Pinot Noir (Martinborough, Wairarapa, New Zealand) shows an even, dark ruby-red color with a lighter rim. The nose is soft yet penetrating, offering plum and marinated cherry layered with dark herbs and rich floral notes. On the palate, medium-full body carries flavors of cherry and raspberry interwoven with violet, earthy minerals, and subtle spice. Fine-grained tannins provide a velvety texture with a gentle grip, accented by hints of cinnamon bark and black tea. Balanced acidity adds vibrancy, leading to a long, elegant finish. This wine is bold yet refined, with youthful structure and excellent aging potential, especially when paired with dishes like lamb or duck.
About Winery
Escarpment Winery was founded in 1998 in Martinborough, Wairarapa, New Zealand, by acclaimed winemaker Larry McKenna—often referred to as “The Prince of Pinot.” McKenna, already well-known for his work at Martinborough Vineyard, partnered with Australian investors Robert and Mem Kirby to establish the estate along Te Muna Road. Their vision was to craft Pinot Noir that could rival Burgundy while showcasing the unique character of Martinborough’s ancient alluvial soils and cool climate. Over the past 35 years, Escarpment has built a reputation as one of New Zealand’s leading Pinot Noir producers, while also making Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris, all reflecting the distinctive terroir of the region.
