About Winery
Gabriel Ferriere, a well-known broker in Bordeaux in the 18th century was the founder of this estate. Chateau Ferriere was classified a third growth in 1855. The Villars family bought the vineyards and the chateau in 1988 and took over the viticulture and winemaking.
With its 10 hectares, Chateau Ferriere is one of the smallest classified growths. The vineyard is maily located in Margaux, and the soil consists of very deep gravel on limestone marl. The size of the vineyard, combined with its beautiful terroir, make Chateau Ferriere a rare and highly-valued wine.
Claire Villars Luton is responsible for the revival of this estate. Year after year, she has done her best to bring out the unique terror of Chateau Ferriere in the wine, to restore the vineyard to its original splendor, and to make it fully worth of its prestigious classification.
About Winery
Château Ferrière, a unique heritage in Margaux
The Merlaut family bought Château Ferrière with the ambition of restoring its former glory, which had led it to its status as 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855. In 1992, after the death of her mother Bernadette, Claire took over the management of the estate and has devoted herself to restoring Château Ferrière's prestige.
Its 24-hectare vineyard is located 95% on the Margaux plateau, in the heart of the appellation. It is a unique heritage of massal diversity as a third of the vines that makes up the vineyard dates from the 1950s. Certified in Organic Agriculture in 2015, Château Ferrière is the first Grand Cru Classé of Margaux to be dualy certified in Biodynamics in 2018 by Demeter & Biodyvin.
Tasting Notes
Château Ferriere 2022 is a vintage of character and surprising contrasts. Despite the extreme weather conditions, the wine has a magnificent freshness.
95-96 Points, James Suckling
"A wine that shows wonderful fruit with a ripeness and freshness at the same time. Medium to full body. Velvety and open. Blackcurrant, orange peel, and lovely fruit. Energy. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification." James Suckling
92-94 Points, Wine Advocate
"A blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2022 Ferrière offers up aromas of dark berries, plums and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate that's suave, elegantly muscular and lively. From biodynamically farmed clay- rich gravels, this 18-hectare estate (formerly leased to Château Lascombes) possesses an unusually high proportion of old vines, with fully one-third of their vineyards over 70 years of age."
