The J. Lohr Story
One of the country’s most popular wine brands

Fifty years ago, Jerry Lohr embarked on a career change. What followed would reshape the landscape of the California wine industry and create one of the country’s most popular wine brands.

Before Central Coast Fame

Fifty years ago, the California Central Coast had not yet emerged as one of North America’s world-class winegrowing regions.

With little history or viticultural precedent, planting on the Central Coast was a gamble. One of a handful of early pioneers, Jerry Lohr was among the first to realize the inherent potential of Monterey and Paso Robles for growing high quality grapes and producing superb wines.

Pioneering Monterey and Paso Robles

It’s no coincidence that the Central Coast’s emergence as a world class winegrowing region runs parallel with the establishment and growth of J. Lohr Vineyards & Winery. Founder Jerry Lohr is one of the region’s pioneers and has played a larger-than-life role in bringing the area to prominence.

Today

J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines now includes more than 1,400 acres of cool-climate estate vineyards in the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands regions of Monterey County, with an emphasis on Chardonnay, Riesling, Valdiguié, and Pinot Noir.

J. Lohr farms over 2,700 acres of vineyards in Paso Robles, now recognized as one of the world’s best spots for Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux and Rhone varietals. Nearly all the red wines in the J. Lohr portfolio come from here, affirming the foresight of Jerry’s original vision.

The winery also owns 30+ acres in Napa Valley at our spectacular Carol’s Vineyard, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

From this rich and diverse palette of sustainably farmed estate fruit, J. Lohr crafts wines showcasing bold, concentrated flavors and a vibrant sense of place. The winery offers seven tiers of award-winning wines: J. Lohr Signature Cabernet Sauvignon, J. Lohr Cuvée Series, J. Lohr Vineyard Series, J. Lohr Gesture (available solely to wine club members), J. Lohr Pure Paso® Proprietary Red Wine, J. Lohr Estates, and J. Lohr Monterey Roots.

J. Lohr has state-of-the art winemaking facilities in Greenfield and Paso Robles. The J. Lohr Wine Centers in San Jose and Paso Robles host thousands of visitors and fans each year.

Founded five decades ago and still family-owned and operated today, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines has established itself as one of the industry’s most respected wine brands. Jerry Lohr’s remarkable career continues in close, hands-on partnership with his children and co-owners Steve, Cynthia, and Lawrence. One of America’s favorite wineries is poised for its next exciting, pioneering chapter.

Rooted in Sustainable Farming

Our dedication to sustainability and the environment traces its roots to founder Jerry Lohr’s seven decades of farming experience.

Growing Sustainability

J. Lohr takes very seriously its leadership role in “Growing Sustainability” throughout the wine industry. In acknowledgement of its many contributions to the cause of furthering vineyard and winery sustainable practices, J. Lohr received the Green Medal Leader Award from the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.

The Leader Award honors the vineyard or winery that “best demonstrates the ability to balance multiple objectives of environmental, economic, and social goals, excelling in these areas with sustainability being clearly integrated into the overall business.”

J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines
Winery in Central Coast, United States
Vintage to vintage, Family, Place, and Craft are at the heart of J. Lohr’s success

Forty-seven years of direct family ownership. 1974 saw the first wine produced under a J. Lohr label. That same year, J. Lohr’s San Jose Wine Center opened. From day one, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines has been family owned; today founder Jerry Lohr and his three children Steve, Cynthia, and Lawrence oversee one of the country’s most successful, most trusted fine wine labels.

J. Lohr wines’ sense of place results from experience and innovation in the vineyard – gained from over four decades of farming in Monterey, Paso Robles, and Napa Valley. Very few wineries on J. Lohr’s scale can boast such deep, permanent roots in these appellations, producing and bottling everything we sell. The vineyards provide the “where”; they are at the core of J. Lohr’s reputation for quality. Every vintage is a new learning experience, adding to past knowledge gained from the land. Constant viticultural research, improvement, and replanting are the norm; the vineyards of J. Lohr are living laboratories.

Owning our vineyards and wineries enables J. Lohr to produce consistently superior wines, vintage after vintage. Complete “soil to bottle” control is the key to J. Lohr’s quality and craft. This rigorous, every-step-of-the-way philosophy is echoed in the legal term “Produced and Bottled By” on J. Lohr’s back labels. J. Lohr is fortunate to have some of the industry’s best and brightest talents in every department - most have been with the winery for many years. Experience, teamwork, and a commitment to constantly improve guarantee quality in every bottle of J. Lohr.

At J. Lohr, our commitment to sustainability and the environment is informed by Founder Jerry Lohr’s seven decades of farming experience. We were early adopters of sustainable practices and helped “write the book” on codifying industry-wide methods and certifications. Today, sustainability is embraced by a passionate second generation of the Lohr family, dedicated to preserving this important aspect of the company’s legacy. Our commitment to environmental stewardship and “farming for the future” is woven into every aspect of our winery’s life.
