Winemaker Notes

Coach Gun is Somerston's flagship wine and has proved to be a favorite among the winery's members and fans. The 2013 vintage of this wine is no exception and as Robert Parker stated, "2013 may turn out to be the finest vintage I have experienced in tasting North Coast varietals over the last 37 years. It's a game-changer in terms of the consistency of quality, the depth of quality, and the across-the-board excellence for so many wines."

The 2013 Coach Gun is full of dark berry flavor with hints of black currant on the nose. Comprised of all five Bordeaux varietals - Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, this wine is truly a favorite among red wine lovers.

Pair with seared ribeye with dijon mushroom sauce.

About Winery

Priest Ranch wines are grown and made at the Somerston Estate in the Eastern Hills of Napa Valley. The eastern part of the Somerston property was originally settled by Joshua James Priest who arrived in California in 1849. Priest gained title to 638 acres of the Catacula land grant in Soda Valley and he and his descendants managed to hold on to most of the ranch for over a century. Today, all the Priest Ranch wines are 100% Estate Grown and made from selected vineyard blocks that express integrated and intensely rich, yet approachable qualities. Priest Ranch wines represent the diversity and richness of the Somerston Estate.

APPELLATION & VINEYARDS | The historic Priest Ranch is now part of the Somerston Estate, a significant property totaling 1,615 acres, with 222 acres planted to hillside vineyards. Dramatic elevations of the vineyards define and distinguish the estate, ranging from 800 ft to 2,400 ft above sea level. In 2013, the grapes for this wine were chosen from five separate hillside blocks.

WINEMAKING |  Our 2013 Coach Gun was handpicked, sorted, and fermented naturally, then aged for 28 months in 50% new French oak barrels. The blend was refined over the course of the first year of aging and the final blend was determined just months before bottling.

SUGGESTED FOOD PAIRING | Seared Ribeye with Dijon Mushroom Sauce

Coach Gun is a red blend full of dark berry flavors with a hint of blackcurrant on the nose. Comprised of all five Bordeaux varietals - Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, this wine is indeed a favorite among red wine lovers. "The big, rich 2013 Coach Gun Proprietary Red is a blend of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. There’s a whopping 30% Cabernet Franc in it, the biggest part of the wine. This wine is a beauty. Sweet licorice, black and red currants, camphor and a touch of charcoal jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored wine. Medium to full-bodied, it exhibits complex elements in both its aromatics and flavor profile. It is full-bodied, rich, layered and ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years." - 92 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate - October 2015, Issue 221
