About Winery

The name Martin Ray resonates deeply in the history of California Winemaking. Martin Ray was a pioneer, dedicated to crafting single varietal, region specific wine from 1943 through 1972 in Saratoga, in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Mentored by Paul Masson, he took a burgundian approach to his winemaking, and developed what is now one of the most historical properties in California, known as Mount Eden.

Nearly twenty years later, Courtney Benham stumbled upon 1500 cases of Martin Ray wine in a San Jose warehouse. Recognizing his good fortune, and his intent and drive to produce terroir driven wines, Ray’s historical significance and philosophy resonated with him. Courtney purchased the brand, and since 1990 has been committed to the production of artisanal wines worthy of the Martin Ray name.

In 2003, Martin Ray Vineyards & Winery made its home in the Russian River Valley, on the edge of Green Valley at one of the oldest continually working wineries in California. Today, Courtney and his winemaking team devote themselves to Ray’s ideology of making “wines of place”. By sourcing from hillside vineyards, they are relentless at telling the story of each exceptional appellation and vineyard. The depth of the portfolio offers those seeking a unique experience the chance to explore some of the most revered appellations in California. From our 12 acre Estate, to the mountain regions of Santa Cruz and Napa, to the northern reaches of Dry Creek Valley and Sonoma Coast, there is an abundance of phenomenal growing regions, great farming, and meticulous detail to vintages.

OUR HOUSE
With a passionate commitment to craft terroir-driven sparkling wines, we produce our Brut Rosé in-house, by hand, without compromise. Partnering with renowned domestic sparkling winemaker Keith Hock, Leslie Renaud and Raemy Paterson are dedicated to developing wines that showcase the complexity and breadth of the vineyard and varietal. Clean, focused, and electrifying, these wines are destined to be savored and celebrated.

THE WINE
A brilliant, coral-tinged hue, our inaugural Brut Rose is a red fruit-filled and racy wine, wrapped in citrus and spice. Refined finesse, its delicate effervescence transcends into an exquisite, round palate and lingering finish. From the wild and fervent nose to the bright, punchy fruit, it embodies the breadth of its origins and heritage.

TERROIR
A blend of equal parts clone 115 and 828 of our Estate Pinot Noir and a select old-vine Chardonnay vineyard, each site experiences warm low-lying morning fog, warm daytime highs, and cooling inversion layers drawn in from the Pacific. Situated on enviable Goldridge soil, each lot showcases the vibrant acidity and ample fruit that the Russian River Valley is known for.

A creamy and round textured full-bodied bubbly with lovely peach and cream notes. A new sparkling wine from Martin Ray.

WINEMAKING NOTES
Made in the traditional method. Hand-harvested and fermented in temperature-regulated stainless to maintain freshness. Blended to represent and balance each lot, bottled for secondary fermentation, and aged for a minimum of three years.

TASTING NOTES
Floral and energetic, with zesty mandarin, ripe cantaloupe, and touches of guava. Candied red apple, pluot skins, and subtle Meyer lemon surround precise bubbles and a creamy mousse. Bright acidity and vivacious red fruits throughout, layered over magnolia, cardamom, and a hint of Iberico, with a Bing cherry finish.
