2007 Saxum Booker Vineyard GSM
Region: Central Coast
This wine is a combination of extremely concentrated Syrah grapes with great acidity, whole cluster Syrah grapes that produce a black tannic wine with great texture, and Mourvedre that gives wonderful intensity and structure. The resulting blend is very concentrated, with great texture and tons of fruit and spice. Our wines are never racked off their lees and are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre based blends from the Templeton Gap of Paso Robles, California. We let our rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through our wines by keeping our yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. Production is kept at a total of 2200-2800 cases per year divided between 6 different cuvees, Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block and Bone Rock.
Our 2007's, are what I feel is the best vintage yet for Saxum. So yes, I think each of these wines is the best that we have done, they are more complex, layered, and concentrated than previous years. These wines have a long life ahead of them due to their great acidity and tannin structure, yet they are enjoyable now because they are so well balanced.
The 2007’s are chameleons too. When you first pour yourself a taste they quickly start changing in the glass. Every smell and taste produces a new element, the first second there are violets and the next is roasted meats, truly fascinating. It will be a joy to watch how they develop in bottle over the next decade or more.

The 2007 Booker is 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache (from Heartstone Vineyard) and was completely destemmed. Still inky black in color, with killer notes of blackcurrants, smoked earth, charcoal and licorice, it's young, full-bodied, elegant and silky, with sensational purity. It’s another awesome wine by this incredible talented winemaker. (7/2018)
99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The inky/purple-hued 2007 Booker Vineyard (95% Syrah and 5% Grenache) boasts a floral-dominated bouquet with camphor, blackberry, roasted meat, and espresso scents in the background. The density, flavor intensity, richness, full-bodied power, elegance, and freshness are all hallmarks of this special vintage in the Central Coast. (RP) (8/2009)
