Vintage: 2020

Region: Mendoza

Country: Argentine

Winemaker Notes

The 2020 Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard Malbec is a powerful yet polished expression of Altamira’s terroir. It shows deep violet color and opens with aromas of ripe black and red currants, raspberries, and wild berries, accented by thyme and framed with elegant French oak. On the palate, it is dense and concentrated, with layers of raspberry compote, dark fruit, and chocolatey notes balanced by firm-grained tannins that provide grip and structure. Despite its richness, the wine retains freshness and poise, finishing long and persistent. Decanting enhances its complexity if enjoyed now, though it has the depth to evolve beautifully over the next 5–7 years.

About Winery

Bodega Catena Zapata, founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena in Mendoza, Argentina, is one of the country’s most influential wineries. Initially rooted in traditional Italian winemaking, the estate was transformed under Nicolás Catena Zapata, who introduced modern techniques and championed Malbec at high altitudes in the Andean foothills. His pioneering work in the 1980s and 1990s—exploring extreme terroirs like the Adrianna Vineyard at nearly 5,000 feet—helped elevate Argentine wine to global recognition. Today, the winery remains family-run, with Nicolás’s daughter Laura Catena continuing the legacy, and it is celebrated for its role in resurrecting Malbec and establishing Argentina as a world-class wine region.
