Winemaker Notes
The 2022 Kupe by Escarpment Single Vineyard Pinot Noir (Martinborough, Wairarapa, New Zealand) is a striking expression of the Abel clone Pinot Noir, grown on Escarpment’s home block vineyard along Te Muna Road. It shows a deep ruby color with violet reflections and opens with aromas of ripe raspberry, black cherry, and wild rose, layered with cedar, sandalwood, bitter orange zest, and subtle graphite minerality. On the palate, it is ample and velvety, combining rich fruit concentration with fresh acidity. Notes of dark cherry, framboise, and spice are supported by silky, well-integrated tannins, leading to a long, elegant, and persistent finish. This wine balances power and finesse, reflecting both the terroir of Martinborough and the meticulous élevage in French oak.
About Winery
Escarpment Winery was founded in 1998 in Martinborough, Wairarapa, New Zealand, by acclaimed winemaker Larry McKenna—often referred to as “The Prince of Pinot.” McKenna, already well-known for his work at Martinborough Vineyard, partnered with Australian investors Robert and Mem Kirby to establish the estate along Te Muna Road. Their vision was to craft Pinot Noir that could rival Burgundy while showcasing the unique character of Martinborough’s ancient alluvial soils and cool climate. Over the past 35 years, Escarpment has built a reputation as one of New Zealand’s leading Pinot Noir producers, while also making Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris, all reflecting the distinctive terroir of the region.
