Since 1984, this outstanding vineyard has been part of the Heitz estate and produces one of our three, single-vineyard cabernet sauvignons. Nestled between Silverado Trail and Conn Creek on the fertile, eastern side of the Rutherford appellation, only the best blocks are selected for this terroir-driven cabernet sauvignon.

Winemaker Notes
Located at the base of the Vaca mountain range along the eastern edge of Rutherford, the Trailside Vineyard captures the heart of Rutherford terroir, vinified in our classic Heitz style. The well-drained volcanic soil of this parcel allows it to convey the essence of the growing season, year after year. 2017 was a warm and concentrated growing season in Napa Valley, and we see this expressed in vibrant notes of ripe red fruit, sage, and thyme. The aromatics are all supported by firm tannins and an elegant finish. Aged for four years in our cellar followed by one year in bottle, this wine was created with your immediate enjoyment in mind and will continue to evolve over the next 20+ years.

On the palate, the 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon displays a variety of soft and elegant red fruits such as wild raspberry, ripe strawberry, and red currant. The undertones of Western Red Cedar and fresh turned potting soil evoke an old world earthiness that remains true to classic style of Cabernet Sauvignon from decades past.

Thick in black fruit, soy and leather, this is a concentrated and well-structured wine, showing plenty of ability to age. Sinewy and still tight, it shows the warmth of the vintage and underlying freshness that helps to balance and broaden. Enjoy best from 2027–2032.

Heitz's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is predominantly St. Helena fruit, but it includes grapes from other AVAs as well. With its cherry notes and some darker, more cassis-like nuances, hints of dried herbs and dusty earth, it's pretty classic old-school Cabernet. Medium to full-bodied, it's linear, silky and fine, avoiding any sense of jammy excess.
